Process for Veterans and Dependents

Active Duty Military

For active duty military, service members are encouraged to contact their Educational Service Officer (ESO) or command counselor prior to applying for admission or enrolling at the university.

Many military-connected students use VA education benefits, also known as the GI Bill®, to pay for their education. To use VA education benefits at MSMU, please make sure to follow the steps below. For more information on the certification process, please contact our School Certifying Official (SCO).

Process for Veterans

Below is an outline of the process to obtain your VA benefits if you are a veteran.

  1. You must apply for benefits at www.benefits.va.gov/benefits. The VA states that their application review process will take up to, and possibly exceed six (6) weeks.

  2. If this is your first time using your GI benefits, please fill out the online application [form 22-1990].

If you have not used your GI benefits in the past, please make sure to also fill out the online application [form 22-1995].

These VA forms can be found at www.va.gov/vaforms

  3. Send a copy of your Certificate of Eligibility (COE) to our SCO using the address below. You may also email your COE to our SCO Susanna Nelson at snelson@msmu.edu

The VA will mail you the Certificate of Eligibility (COE) directly when it has completed processing your application for benefits. Please make sure to send a copy of the COE to the SCO.

Once the SCO receives a copy of the Certificate of Eligibility, the SCO will begin the verification process and inform you of next steps; and once you have been admitted and registered for courses, the SCO will certify you with the VA for your enrollment.
