Bachelor of Science in Social Work
Making a Difference
Earn the degree that will help you make a difference in countless lives when you choose the Bachelor of Science in Social Work program at Mount Saint Mary’s University.
The Mount’s BSSW degree program aligns with the mission of our founding Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, who are longtime advocates for those in need. Your degree will incorporate a traditional liberal arts education with our social justice-focused curriculum.
About the Degree Program
Our program emphasizes student-centered pedagogy. With a focus on student learning and growth, our eclectic pedagogy includes an intellectual, culturally relevant, psychosocial developmental framework allowing our faculty the ability to address the cognitive and social needs of each student. In short, we focus on every single student in our degree program and work to ensure each one’s success.
In addition, our educators employ a backwards design framework which incorporates scaffolding, cooperative learning, high-impact practices and a constructivist lens encompassing the formal curriculum design of the program. The Mount’s Department of Social Work also infuses Human Rights Education and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) into the curriculum. Students are well-versed in identifying violations and how to be a human rights defender.
The overall goal of Mount’s Bachelor of Science in Social Work degree program is to produce social workers who are independent and self-regulated learners who possess a high-level competence of skills.
If you plan on post-graduate studies, it’s important to note that the Department of Social Work’s faculty offers all students one-on-one academic advisement throughout the four-year degree program, not only to help our students stay on track, but to help plan ahead for those who wish to pursue post-graduate studies.
We make academic advisement a priority. After all, the Mount’s Social Work team are all proud alumnae of MSMU.
