International Book Day: Books and Roses

It started with the legend of a sainted knight who saved a princess from a dragon and gave her a red rose. In the 15th century giving a rose to the women you love on April 23 (Sant Jordi) became a tradition in Catalonia. In the 1920s giving a book to the men you love was added. Now is a special celebration of St. George’s Day, on which both love and the love of books are celebrated around the world. The Language and Culture Department in collaboration with MSMU Libraries give out books and roses to the Mount community as a celebration of this tradition.

Latitudes @ MSMU is the Language and Culture Department magazine written by alumni, students, faculty, and staff. Members of our department have a space to share their creative writings and research papers in Spanish and other foreign languages.

To submit work to Latitudes please contact Prof. Maritza Fonseca (H512) at
