Course Highlights – Student Testimonials
“One of my favorite classes was microbiology with Dr. Peterson. I loved how relevant the subject is to our daily life and it was so interesting learning how microscopic organisms can wreak such havoc. I also thought the lab was really fun.”
– Brigitte Solorzano, ‘20
“My favorite biology class at the Mount was definitely Genetics. I enjoyed the math & problem solving aspects, as well as learning more in depth about how DNA holds all the genes and how they’re inherited.”
– Ann Gonzalez, ‘19
“Genetics is an essential course that taught me critical thinking skills I have been able to apply to my own research. It incorporates a perfect balance between logic and creativity as we deduce information from pedigrees and interpret various gels/assays. Dr. Peterson is an amazing professor that truly cares for her students and enriches the course with her own knowledge and experience.”
– Mahak Virlley, ‘19
BIO151: Medical Physiology+-
“Medical Physiology is a challenging, but easy-to-understand course because of the unparalleled instruction by Dr. Chotiner. Dr. Chotiner created a space within the classroom for students to express their creativity and apply their critical thinking skills to scientific concepts. I have applied what I learned to broaden my research interests and to better understand my own body and its biological processes.”
– Mahak Virlley, ‘19
“My favorite Biology class at Mount Saint Mary's was Medical Physiology. It was a really exciting challenge to learn about the body systems' functions, and what can go wrong with the body. I believe that the depth and rigor of this class were essential in preparing me for the MCAT.”
– Arleen Lamba, ‘19
“My favorite biology class at MSMU was medical physiology. It helped me to not only critically think about how the body functions but also provided me with the best preparation for the MCAT research-based passages. You will learn about how the heart pumps the blood throughout the body, how the lung takes in oxygen, how the kidney filters out urine, and almost anything else you can think of that pertains to bodily functions."
– Lizbeth Alvarez, ‘13, MPH, University of California Davis School of Medicine
BIO158L: Stem Cell Research Techniques+-
“Another interesting class I took was a Stem Cell Research Techniques Lab. We learned to induce stem cells to become cardiac cells. Under a microscope, we observed these cardiac cells beat! We designed an experiment to see how the rate of beating was influenced by temperature changes and the presence of caffeine.”
– Arleen Lamba, ‘19
BIO167: Advanced Topics in Environmental Science+-
“Before taking the Advanced Environmental Science course, tackling both social and environmental issues was something that I was unaware of. The bigger picture of how our biological world/environment has and continues to be affected by anthropogenic activity framed a larger understanding of how important environmental awareness is for our society.”
– Vivian Lee, ‘19
BIO198: Biological Research+-
“Being able to conduct research at MSMU was a life changing experience for me. This experience opened my eyes to a different side of science that I was not aware of and opened up a new career path for me. During my time in Dr. Nogaj’s lab I not only learned key laboratory skills, but I became a confident and independent researcher all of which has proven to be valuable for graduate school.”
– Catalina Pereira, ‘14, PhD Candidate in Biochemistry, Molecular, and Cellular Biology at Cornell University
