Program Goals and Outcomes

The assessment plan for the Health and Human Services program was developed over the academic year 2008-2009 in collaboration with the faculty members and alums of the Sociology department. The HUM assessment coordinator, Amanda Romero, worked closely with the Sociology assessment coordinator, Dr. Pam Haldeman, in order to create an assessment plan that is aligned with the bachelor’s program goals and outcomes since the associate’s program feeds into the bachelor’s program. The goals and outcomes were created with an emphasis on social and behavioral phenomena, group dynamics, service learning, and professional development. The department met three times during the fall 2009 semester to discuss the assessment plan in detail.

The assessment plan for the Health and Human Services program is connected to the mission of the College since it encourages students to enter into the helping professions. The department works diligently to offer students courses that provide them with the necessary skills to be successful in the helping professions, but to also be an engaged and informed member of society.

The department began implementing this assessment plan in the spring of 2010 and continues to look forward to reviewing the results. The faculty work closely together to provide students with culturally relevant material and are always looking for ways to improve teaching and pedagogy.

After carefully reviewing and assessing the data collected for the spring 2010 semester, changes were made to the goals, outcomes, and assignments. It is a high priority of the department to align assessment goals to create a clear curriculum map and assessment plan.

GoalOutcome

Mastery of the Sociological Perspective, which involves building skills in complex thinking using sociological theories. It requires that students understand and effectively apply theories on human behavior and interaction to real life circumstances, both in the workplace and in students’ personal lives.

  1. Students will demonstrate a basic understanding of the Human Services theories and principles
  2. Students will be able to utilize biopsychosocial Analysis.
  3. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the sociological analysis.
 

Demonstrates an understanding of Health and Human Services ethical standards and theories of practice and apply knowledge and skills gained in the classroom to a professional setting related to future career goal.

  1. Students will demonstrate an understanding of Health and Human Services ethical standards
  2. Students will demonstrate the ability to access resources for clients and act as an advocate for them.
 

As advocates, strong communication skills are fundamental to the field of Health & Human Services. Students will learn to communicate in a range of modes and in a culturally competent manner.

  1. Students will practice the roles of communication in human interaction via technology and multimedia.
  2. Students will practice varying techniques of culturally competent communication.
