Meet the Coach
Ederson Lopes was named Mount Saint Mary’s University Head Soccer Coach in July 2018. Coach Eddie is originally from Sao Paulo, Brazil, and played professional soccer as an attacking midfielder and striker in Japan for Thespakusatsu in 2013 and 2014 in J-league seasons. Before that, he played for Clube Atlético Taboão da Serra in Brazil in 2012. As a youth soccer player, Coach Eddie had the experience to play for two prestigious soccer academies in Brazil, run by S.C. Corinthians and S.E. Palmeiras, before moving to the United States of America.
When he arrived in the U.S., Coach Eddie attended the University of Rio Grande in Ohio, one of the most successful NAIA soccer programs in the country, where he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Sports and Exercise Science in 2011. While at Rio Grande, he led the Red Storm during the 2007-10 seasons and was a team captain for his last two seasons. Coach Eddie had a tremendous career as a student-athlete in Ohio; he was selected as the America Mideast player and freshman of the year and also NAIA All-America for three consecutive years. He led the Red Storm to two conference titles and one NAIA National Runner-up.
After an injury at the end of the 2014 season in Japan ended Coach Eddie’s professional playing career, he switched his focus to coaching. His coaching experience includes Galway Rovers FC in Massachusetts, North Manatee Soccer Club in Florida, and various youth programs in Southern California. In order to maximize his coaching and leadership skills, Coach Eddie went back to the University of Rio Grande as the men’s soccer assistant coach for the 2017-2018 season under head coach Scott Morrissey and will graduate in the fall of 2018 with a Master’s Degree in Athletic Coaching Leadership.
Coach Eddie now lives in Brentwood with his wife and enjoys playing Footvolley at the beach, hiking, and eating lots of Brazilian Churrasco.
