Title IX

Title IX refers to the following federal regulations: "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance." (Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, and its implementing regulation at 34 C.F.R. Part 106 - Title IX)

Statement of Values

Mount Saint Mary's University believes in zero tolerance and is committed to providing a learning, working, and living environment free of discrimination on the basis of sex. Mount Saint Mary's University strives to promote an environment where mutual respect, civility, communication, cultural competency, understanding, and awareness are the basis for any activity or behavior. Mutual respect and communication are important to maintaining each individual's personal integrity when engaging in any activity or behavior. The University's policy refers to all forms of sex discrimination, including, but not limited to, faculty, staff, students, or third parties.

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (Title IX) prohibits discrimination based on gender in educational programs that receive federal financial assistance. Programs and activities that may be included are admissions, recruitment, financial aid, academic programs, athletics, housing, and employment. Title IX also protects men and women students from unlawful sexual harassment in school programs and activities. Under Title IX, discrimination on the basis of sex can include sexual harassment; unwelcomed sexual advances; or sexual violence, such as rape, sexual assault, sexual battery, and sexual coercion.

MSMU strictly prohibits all forms of unlawful harassment, discrimination or retaliation in any form. Anyone who violates this policy of zero tolerance is subject to appropriate disciplinary action, up to and including immediate termination or dismissal.
