“To meet the national need for a globally competitive STEM workforce, the National Science Foundation (NSF) established the Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (S-STEM) program. The program seeks to increase the success of low-income academically talented students with demonstrated financial need who are pursuing associate, baccalaureate, or graduate degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).”
In 2016, Mount Saint Mary’s University was awarded the NSF S-STEM grant for its undergraduate STEM majors (NSF award ID 1564677.) Our grant, Supporting STEM Scholars to Succeed (S4), provides financial support for a total of 18 MSMU STEM majors for four years. Each student scholar receives up to $8,500 of academic funds per each year. In fall of 2017, MSMU STEM departments will offer eight S4 Scholarships to academically talented & financially disadvantaged freshman STEM students. And, in spring of 2018, ten more sophomore STEM students will be selected for this scholarship. The deadline for freshman S4 application submission is May 2nd, 2017 and for sophomore applicants is April 1st, 2018.
