Brittany White is the head coach of Mount Saint Mary’s new women’s club basketball team.
Tip-off: Club basketball arrives at the Mount
The club sports scene at Mount Saint Mary’s has a new bounce in its step. In the past year, the University has started club teams for soccer and volleyball; now, basketball has been added to the growing ranks of sport opportunities at the Mount.
The team already has its first coach. Brittany White has been named head coach of Mount Saint Mary’s new women’s club basketball team. She currently is girls basketball coach at Jordan High School in Los Angeles, and will serve in both positions concurrently.
A Detroit native, White has something most basketball coaches don’t: She earned a juris doctorate in sports law, with an emphasis in NCAA and Title IX compliance, from Florida Coastal School of Law in Jacksonville, Fla. She holds a bachelor’s degree in legal communications from Washington, D.C.’s Howard University, where she played women’s club basketball. White also gained experience as an athletics compliance intern at UCLA, Loyola Marymount University and San Diego State University.
With White’s hiring, the Mount takes a major step forward in building a women’s athletics program that will complement the University’s widely recognized academic programs. The initiative is part of the University’s current strategic plan to expand course offerings and programs in physical education that promote and support lifetime health and wellness. The plan also includes a new Wellness Pavilion that will serve as the team’s home base; construction is slated to begin by the fall of 2017.
“I know from personal experience that the opportunity to play collegiate sports can be a vital part of a student’s educational career,” White says. “Equally important, opening the Mount to more sports can help the University compete against other colleges for students who are seeking that scholar-athlete experience.”
Recruitment a top priority
One of White’s immediate objectives is to fill out the team’s roster. Tryouts have been offered this spring semester. And, in August, she will begin aggressively recruiting new players with the goal of competing first against regional club teams, such as those from USC and Cal State Northridge, and then competing nationally.
“We have the opportunity to build a fast ‘run-and-gun’ team,” White says. “I’m looking for serious players who are committed to playing hard and working even harder, and who can compete on the same level as the strong shooters and ball handlers we have now.”
A long-time student of the game, White has followed many of the great women’s basketball coaches, taken what they used successfully, and then applied it to create her own coaching style.
“One of the things I learned early on is that every player is different and each brings a unique skill set. My job is to help them develop their individual abilities and then bring them all together,” she says. “When you’re building a program from the ground up, that is both a tremendous challenge and a wonderful opportunity.”
In looking at the team’s future prospects, White adds: “I come from a competitive background and I know how to compete and win. Expect Mount Saint Mary’s basketball to make a lot of noise.”
