Three from the Mount honored as 'Best and Brightest' scholars

A trio of Mount St. Mary’s students have earned “Best & Brightest” scholarships from the Millennium Momentum Foundation for the 2012-2013 school year. Alba Arana ‘14, Guadalupe Borjon ‘13 and Karla Guzman ‘13 each received scholarships worth $3,000 for their academic achievements and aspirations to pursue careers in public service.

The Foundation’s Best & Brightest Scholarship Program, one of the most competitive in Southern California, seeks students that possess a combination of exceptional academic merit, strong leadership potential, commitment to reinvest in their local communities and financial need.

The “Best & Brightest” scholarships include more than financial support. The Mount’s Arana, Borjon and Guzman will also receive support from the Foundation’s Leadership Development Institute — support that includes peer and professional mentoring, leadership development training, career guidance, and job-placement services.

“This scholarship means the world to me because it is providing me with the opportunity to fund my education,” Arana says, “but it is also training me to become a better leader in my own community.”

Arana, Borjon and Guzman initially received their scholarships during a Millennium Momentum Foundation gala held at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in November 2012. The gala celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Foundation’s “Opening Doors” awards, and the Mount’s award-winners received their honors in front of some well-known supporters.

Actor and philanthropist Lou Diamond Phillips was on hand to receive the Foundation’s 2012 Humanitarian of the Year Award, and actor Kiefer Sutherland served as an award presenter. Los Angeles City Councilmember Eric Garcetti presented the Mount’s students with their “Best & Brightest” scholarship awards.

Mount St. Mary’s students are invited to apply for these scholarships annually as part of the Mount’s relationship with the Foundation. The College has previously received a Millennium Momentum Ambassador of Education award from the Foundation.
