The first season of Mount Saint Mary's new club basketball team is in the books.
During 2016-2017, the Athenians competed in games and regional tournaments against the likes of club counterparts at UCLA, Loyola Marymount University, Grand Canyon University, California State University, Northridge, University of California, Irvine, and California Polytechnic State University.
The University's club sports program is poised to grow as more incoming students choose the Mount, based, in part, on the opportunity to play competitive sports. In addition to basketball, Mount Saint Mary's has launched teams in volleyball and soccer over the past few years.
Sports programming is one spoke in the evolving wellness wheel at Mount Saint Mary's. Beyond the competition, sports help build leadership, confidence, energy, and camaraderie.
"I play basketball at Mount Saint Mary's because I love the game and because I can relieve a lot of stress by playing," says Liliana McMillian-Ruiz '20, a film, media and social justice major. "Wellness is all about balancing mind, body and soul, and the Mount helps me do that."
Mount Saint Mary's continues to add more opportunities for club sports and recreation on campus, as part of the University's Mount Wellness movement. And basketball head coach Brittany White is recruiting additional players for next year's squad this summer, with 2017-2018 play beginning this fall. Info on Athenian basketball team - as well as the Mount's Soccer and volleyball teams - are available on the Sports Clubs page.
