A national higher education student affairs administrators network has selected MSMU to take the lead in finding innovative ways to engage students in American civic life.

MSMU Selected as Lead Institution in Movement to Foster Student Civic Engagement

September 12, 2012 -- Mount Saint Mary’s University (MSMU) is pleased to announce that it has been selected as one of 25 institutions to lead the Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement Network for NASPA — Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education.

MSMU will be at the forefront of an emerging national movement to make democratic engagement a part of every student’s college education. “This project presents many new opportunities for collaboration across the College,” said Jane Lingua, MSMU vice president for student affairs. “Most importantly, our students will benefit significantly from being a part of this network.”

MSMU will find innovative ways to partner with others on and off campus to influence students’ ongoing commitment to civic learning and democratic engagement. The College will include clear and tangible civic learning and democratic engagement activities in strategic goals and learning outcomes, and establish a one-year timeline for goal achievements supporting civic learning and democratic engagement. MSMU is also responsible for collecting and reporting data on enhancing civic learning and democratic engagement, and for fostering student-led solutions to community issues.

The network is encouraging the lead institutions to leverage excitement among young Americans about this year’s presidential election. Student dialogues about political-themed issues will play a big part in this year's activities. To learn more about student leadership and civic engagement at MSMU, click here.
