Mount Alumna Earns Two Doctoral Degrees at the Same Time

June 11, 2007 -- Mount alumna Giovanna Brasfield '98 earned her MSMU bachelor’s degree, an MBA, and two doctorate degrees--all before she turned 30. What's more, she finished the two doctorate programs, in education and in public administration, at the same time. Brasfield’s super-pace continues this summer as she readies a campaign to earn a seat on the Compton Unified School Board in November.

“The sky is the limit,” says Brasfield, a Los Angeles native who has lived in Compton for five years. “I’m so excited about the future and where it’s going to lead me.” She was awarded both doctorates in May from the University of La Verne, making history as the first person to earn two from the institution.

Brasfield says her parents set a solid foundation for her to study hard and finish college. But she says she graduated from high school with a so-so grade point average and lacked direction. An open house visit to the Mount's downtown Doheny Campus turned her around, and she never looked back, she says.

The alum now runs Brasfield & Associates Marketing in Los Angeles. Earlier this year, she won the John F. Kennedy, Jr., Award for Outstanding Public Service from the California Democratic Party, in part for co-hosting Compton’s Economic Empowerment & Development Summit.

Brasfield says she is running for school board to spread her knowledge of education policy and organizational management. “I can help motivate children and their parents to understand how policy is set and to get more involved in the community.”
