MONEY magazine named Mount Saint Mary's University, Los Angeles the No. 1 U.S. school on its list of "Colleges That Add the Most Value."

MONEY magazine ranks Mount Saint Mary's University No. 1 'Value-Added College' in the U.S.

MONEY magazine released its Best Colleges survey results on Aug. 1, and Mount Saint Mary’s University (formerly Mount St. Mary’s College) stands at the top of the publication’s “Value All-Stars” list.

According to MONEY, Mount Saint Mary’s University students are 23 percent more likely to graduate than others in their peer groups, and they out-earn their peers in the workforce by $13,930. The College helps “turn out graduates who exceed the averages for their peer groups by the widest margin,” the magazine reported.

MONEY, which is published by Time, Inc., officially rated Mount Saint Mary’s as the No. 1 college in the United States on its list of “Colleges That Add the Most Value.” The ranking takes into account the economic and academic profiles of incoming students, as well as the mix of majors and programs available at the school, and then calculates which schools help attendees succeed beyond what would be expected given their backgrounds.

“This distinction is proof of the transformational power of a dynamic education led by a highly committed faculty and staff,” says President Ann McElaney-Johnson. “We are extremely proud that more than 50 percent of our students are the first in their families to attend college. We are even prouder of all the incredible things that our alums are accomplishing once they leave the Mount.”

In announcing its rankings, MONEY highlighted the success of Mount Saint Mary’s alum Winta Habteslassie ’13, who graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.

“After Habteslassie had trouble getting into classes related to her marketing major at California State University at Northridge, she transferred in 2011 to Mount Saint Mary’s, a private women’s university in Los Angeles,” the magazine reported. “Her accounting professors were so encouraging that she switched to that more lucrative major and joined the school’s accounting association. That helped her win a job at Deloitte & Touche, where she’ll be starting this fall” as a first-year audit associate.

Dennis Signorovitch was one of Habteslassie’s professors at the Mount, leading her Management Communications course. “Winta is representative of the focused commitment that Mount Saint Mary’s can provide its students,” Signorovitch says. “Here, she challenged herself. I watched her gain in poise, and in her ability to express her views of the cases we studied with increasing confidence and self assurance.”

In addition to its first-place status among MONEY’s “Value All-Stars,” the Mount also rated No. 18 among MONEY's "25 Best Colleges That You Can Actually Get Into." Overall, Mount Saint Mary's came in at No. 122 in the publication’s comprehensive standings of all U.S. colleges and universities. To create its comprehensive rankings, the magazine studied roughly 1,500 four-year U.S. colleges, placing Mount Saint Mary’s in the top 10 percent nationally. The three main categories MONEY took into account for its rankings were educational quality, affordability and alumni earnings.

The Mount’s high ranking is also reflective of its ability to help students who choose less economically promising majors to earn far more than the norm for their career fields. In addition to its undergraduate women’s college, Mount Saint Mary’s also offers an innovative Weekend/Evening College and Graduate Programs for working adults.
