'La Source' documentary to screen as part of the Mount's April 16 FilmFest series
In 2010, Haitian native Josue Lajeunesse was working as a custodian at Princeton University. After a 7.0-magnitude earthquake devastated Haiti, Lajeunesse returned home to revive his lifelong dream: to build a clean water system for his village, the town of La Source.
On April 16, Mount St. Mary’s College will show “La Source,” which documents Lajeunesse’s mission – a journey that sparked support across both Haiti and the United States. The screening is part of Mount St. Mary’s FilmFest series, which is free and open to the public. Each screening also includes a conversation with the filmmakers. “La Source” was created by Award-winning director Patrick Shen (“The Philosopher Kings”).
Narrated by Oscar-nominated actor Don Cheadle (“Hotel Rwanda,” “Crash”), with music scored by Sigur Ros, “La Source” has proved to be a success both cinematically and as a vehicle for social change.
The movie was a hit at the AFI-Discovery Channel Silverdocs Documentary Festival, where it received a standing ovation and a Social Impact Award nomination. The Washington Post calls the film an “artfully shot documentary,” and the Los Angeles Times describes it as a story that “makes you feel good about the world and the people in it.”
Lajeunesse’s journey also galvanized a far-flung community of support for his hometown, including students, musicians and nonprofits. For his efforts, Lajeunesse has been awarded the prestigious Journey Award by Princeton University, “given to someone exemplifying the spirit of Martin Luther King Jr. and, in this case, making the problems of others his own.”
Mount St. Mary’s FilmFest series is sponsored by the College’s Film, Media & Communications department. RSVP by April 9 to reserve a free seat for this screening and conversation with the filmmaker. See RSVP info below.
