China Animation Enterprises, Mount St. Mary's film programs enjoy L.A. mixer

Business leaders from China Animation Enterprises recently visited Los Angeles, and spent part of their trip getting better acquainted with Mount St. Mary’s and the College’s new MFA in Film and Television.

The group represented about 15 private companies, many of them from top animation studios in China. The delegates traveled stateside to meet key players in L.A.’s animation industry, cultivating relationships with film and animation programs in Hollywood. The Ministry of Culture of The People’s Republic of China supported the Chinese contingent’s trip.

On June 13, Professor Kelby Thwaits, a technical producer in Film, Media & Communication at the Mount, provided a tour of the College’s new studio and green screen soundstage at Hollywood Center Studios. Later in the day, new graduate Olivia Mayo ’14 led visitors on a tour of the Chalon Campus.

“The day provided both groups with the opportunity to share their experiences in the world of film and animation,” says Larry Smith, Mount St. Mary’s vice president of strategic initiatives. “It was a time for sharing our mutual appreciation, cherishing the friendships we’re developing and enjoying a wonderful time together.”

At Chalon, representatives from China and Mount St. Mary’s discussed development and market analysis in the animation industry before coming together for an official signing ceremony. Half a dozen MOUs for further understanding were signed between Chinese and Los Angeles based companies at the event. Later that evening, MSMC President Ann McElaney-Johnson spoke to the gathering before a dinner and cocktail reception, as did President Jiang Bo, of the Shanghai Film Art Academy.

The event is the latest in a long line of programs and partnerships between Mount St. Mary’s College and educational institutions in China. Just this spring, the Mount enjoyed a visit from a group of Chinese exchange students, and welcomed its most recent visiting Chinese scholar, Jing Zhang.
