Celebrating 90 unstoppable years: Homecoming 2015
Ninety years of history is worth commemorating.
Ninety years of courage, inspiration and excellence deserve an absolute celebration.
On Saturday, October 10, more than 300 alums, students and friends of Mount Saint Mary’s University reunited in Los Angeles for Homecoming 2015 at the Mount’s Chalon Campus. Filling Mary Chapel with song during Homecoming Mass. Reconnecting with classmates and professors over dinner and drinks. And dancing the night away under rows of lights strung above The Circle.
The Homecoming theme: celebrating 90 unstoppable years…and the bright future ahead.
At Mount Saint Mary’s, it is impossible to grasp how we’ve reached this point without honoring the intrepid leaders who founded the University in 1925 – and continue to serve as its guiding lights today – the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. At Homecoming, more than 50 CSJs returned to campus, enlivening the festivities with their presence and their joy.
President Ann McElaney-Johnson led a toast to the sisters in both English and French (in tribute to the CSJs' origin in Le Puy, France, 365 years ago).
“We thank you for your courage, your vision and the love that you share so generously,” McElaney-Johnson said. “We know we can never give up because you would never give up. You are what makes us unstoppable.”
The president also announced that the University will be establishing the CSJ Institute at Mount Saint Mary’s – to honor the sisters’ legacy and to push forward their work: “The Institute will advance the CSJ commitment to serve all persons without distinction, to respond to the needs of the times, and to prepare fearless visionaries for a just future.”
Homecoming participants got a sneak peek at a new video documenting how the Mount has consistently responded to “the needs of the times.” The video, which will be shared publicly later this fall, traces the University’s dual commitment to student success and social justice throughout its 90-year history.
Those in attendance also got a glimpse of the future during a video highlighting the newest initiative at the Mount: a community-wide wellness movement that will include the first new construction at Chalon in more than 35 years. The Wellness Pavilion will be a new space that will serve as the epicenter of student life and as a hub of activity dedicated to the health and wellness of new generations of Mount students.
“You will hear more about this in the months ahead,” said President McElaney-Johnson, “but I wanted to share all this exciting news with you first, on this festive and monumental evening. Tonight is our moment to celebrate our successes and prepare for a future that looks brighter than ever.”
