Biography

My research sits at the nexus of Psychology and Higher Education, and currently consists of two strands:

1) I study issues of racial equity within college access and completion, particularly the ways that faculty and staff can become agents of change toward greater equity. In studying this process, I use frameworks from social psychology and educational psychology to examine how individuals learn – including the internalization of new language and development of new identities based on new understandings – within organizational settings.

2) After engaging Bachelor’s and Master’s students here at MSMU in the examination and re-design of their academic programs, I have begun to study effective enactment of the “students as co-designers” model. This format utilizes concepts of inquiry-driven learning and project-based learning, and may provide a space for development of agency among students. I have partnered with one of my current graduate students to examine how students of color use project-based learning settings to expand on various cultural and institutional literacies.
