Skirball Fire updates

Check here for the latest updates on the Skirball Fire.

December 6, 2017

Dec. 11 / 11:15 a.m.: As of today, Mount Saint Mary’s Chalon Campus has officially reopened for regular business. Please note that Chalon final exams already rescheduled for today at our Doheny Campus will remain at Doheny. See our previous post on this page from Dec. 8 for information on student support services and resident check-out information for today and tomorrow (Dec. 11-12).

Earlier this morning, the Los Angeles Fire Department reported that the Skirball Fire is at 85% containment and all mandatory evacuation orders (which did not affect Mount Saint Mary’s Chalon Campus on the west side of the 405 Freeway) have been lifted. Nearby freeway ramps and street intersections have also been fully re-opened to traffic.

We remind our Mount Saint Mary’s community to stay vigilant as the National Weather Service still has Los Angeles County under a Red Flag Warning due to gusty wind conditions and low humidity. Be aware that the South Coast Air Quality Management District’s unhealthy smoke advisory is also still in effect for parts of L.A. County.

If any new dangers arise to either campus, we will update the University community via E-Alerts. Sign-up for E-Alerts here:

Dec. 8 / 11 a.m.: While our Chalon Campus remains closed to the public and for regular business, Chalon resident students are being allowed to return briefly to Chalon in order to retrieve their belongings and check out of their dorms. Campus Security and Student Affairs essential personnel are helping to oversee this process.

Chalon checkout is available as long as conditions permit. Students, please continue to check your Mount Saint Mary's email and E-Alerts for updates. All resident checkout times are currently scheduled for:
Friday, Dec. 8: 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Saturday, Dec. 9: 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Sunday, Dec. 10: 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Monday, Dec. 11: 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Tuesday, Dec. 12:  8 a.m. – 11 a.m.

Meanwhile, all remaining final exams for Chalon classes are being held today (Friday, Dec. 8) and Monday, Dec. 11, at our Doheny Campus. Professors also have discretion in how to best complete their courses this semester.

Our Campus Security team will continue to monitor the still-active Skirball Fire. Mount Saint Mary's community members are encouraged to sign-up for E-Alerts should any urgent news need to be reported:

Dec. 7 / 3:15 p.m.:  Due to ongoing power issues and poor air quality from the still-active Skirball Fire, Mount Saint Mary's Chalon Campus, in Brentwood, will remain closed to the public through this coming weekend. Exceptions will only be made for essential personnel, and to allow Chalon residents to return to campus in order to retrieve their belongings and check out of their dorms. Students have received emails from Student Affairs on when those check-out times are taking place.

With Chalon otherwise remaining closed, and in an effort to eliminate any uncertainty, all remaining final exams for Chalon classes will now be held on our Doheny Campus. Chalon final exams that had originally been scheduled for today (Thursday, Dec. 7) will now be made up tomorrow (Friday, Dec. 8) at Doheny. Chalon final exams that were originally scheduled for yesterday (Wednesday, Dec. 6) will now be made up Monday, Dec. 11.

Student Affairs is contacting Chalon students, via email, to provide a detailed list of new exam locations and times. Faculty are also in touch with their students -- via WebAdvisor, Canvas and/or email -- and professors may use their discretion as to how they wish to complete their courses.

Academic staff and administrators will be at a number of Doheny Campus locations on Friday and Monday to assist Chalon faculty and students who may require help finding their exam rooms. Deadlines for final grades have been extended until Friday, Dec. 15.

Student Affairs and Residence Life continue to assist Chalon residents who have been evacuated to Mount Saint Mary's Doheny Campus. That includes helping Chalon resident students check-out for the end of the semester, as well as providing guidance for the retrieval of any belongings that may have been left behind by Chalon residents when the campus was evacuated. Emails are going out to Chalon residents directly with details on that process, which will take place when it is safe to do so.

If any students or parents have any student support questions, they may contact Student Affairs at 213.477.2570. For any residential life needs or concerns, contact our Residence Life office at 213.477.2661. The Doheny Campus' J. Thomas McCarthy Library will also be open with extended hours through Monday, Dec. 11, and cafeteria meal plans will continue through 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 12.

Thank you to everyone for their support, patience and resilience during this trying time. Most importantly, we are grateful that the Mount's Chalon Campus community is safe. We appreciate the work of the University’s Campus Security team and our entire Mount community of staff, faculty, alums, students and neighbors -- as well as the efforts of first responders, firefighters and others in fighting these nearby fires. Our prayers are with those who are even more directly affected by these fires.

We will continue to monitor the Skirball Fire, and will continue to provide updates here, as needed -- as well as via E-Alerts and on Mount Saint Mary's social media channels.

Dec. 6 / 6:28 a.m.: Due to fire near Chalon, final exams on the Chalon Campus are postponed for today (Wednesday). Students, check your email or WebAdvisor for further instructions from your professors about rescheduling final exams.

There is no threat to the Chalon Campus at this time and the campus is not evacuating. But due to very heavy traffic as a result of the Skirball Fire, faculty, staff and commuting students are advised not to travel to Chalon today.

Campus Security is monitoring the situation closely and we will keep you posted as needed.
