With a photographer in tow, nursing alums Jocely Roque ’13 and Kevin Namuag ’15 returned to their alma mater recently to have their engagement photos taken on the campus that means so much to them. “We have always been so proud of how beautiful the Chalon Campus is,” the couple said. “We knew it would not only be the perfect setting for our engagement photos but also a way to show our family and friends how blessed we were to be students at such a stunning campus.”

Here is the story of how they met and what role the Mount played in their relationship.

When and how did you meet?

We met back in 2008. It was Kevin's high school open house. Bernie, Jocely's cousin and Kevin's classmate at the time, brought Jocely along to get a tour of the school in Long Beach. During the open house, Bernie introduced them. We stayed in touch after high school and started dating in December 2009.

What do you remember the most about the day you first met?

Jocely: I remember thinking how cute his smile was because he has a dimple! I was so anxious hoping that he would text me or message me after we met.

Kevin: I did not know Bernie had a really cute cousin and I had to figure out a way to get to know her.

What do you admire most about each other?

Jocely: Kevin can always be cheerful and goofy no matter what is going on in our lives, and it always manages to make me smile. He has such a good heart, which makes him such a great person to be around. He's the perfect balance to me.

Kevin: Jocely is beautiful inside and out. I will always admire her hard work, determination, and positive attitude. It is great to have her by my side because I know that she will always be there for me.

What did you learn at the Mount that has played a role in your relationship?

We really learned to rely on each other and our friends during the nursing program. We supported one another when one of us didn't do well on an exam or celebrated when we found out we passed a very difficult class. Nursing school was not easy, but being together and surrounded by our fellow students at the Mount got us through it. The Mount also allowed us to incorporate our Catholic faith into our studies and everyday lives. Because of this, we have grown closer together through our faith and continue to ensure it is always a part of our relationship. We are both so grateful for the values instilled in us through Mount because not only have they made us the nurses we are today but they have also helped make us great life partners to each other.

Why did you want to take your engagement photos at the Mount?

It was such a nostalgic feeling bringing it full circle back to where a majority of our relationship took place. We really enjoyed showing our photographer, Justin Element, around and explaining why certain places had meaning for us and what had changed over the years since we graduated. We reflected on our times at the Mount, both happy and challenging, and how being there together help mold our relationship into what it is today. We have always been so proud of how beautiful the Chalon Campus is. We knew it would not only be the perfect setting for our engagement photos but also a way to show our family and friends how blessed we were to be students at such a stunning campus.

What are you looking forward to in your marriage?

Our relationship has been such an adventure and we are ecstatic to continue it together, officially! We look forward to a lifetime growing closer together, creating more memories, and supporting each others' future accomplishments. In the near, but not too near, future we hope be blessed with our own little family. But in the meantime, we just want to try new food spots, make our house a home, shred new mountains together, and travel the world.
