In a commentary published by CalMatters, a nonprofit news organization focused on California policies in various sectors, President Ann McElaney-Johnson and others addressed an April 15 editorial by the Los Angeles Times that called for a reimagining of universities to that of models more frequently found in Europe.

While the Times’ comments might be applicable to larger institutions throughout California, the CalMatters piece strongly attests that the educational outcomes and student body demographics found at independent, nonprofit schools like The Mount are vastly different from those larger institutions and rely heavily on continued funding from the state.

Devorah Lieberman, president of the University of La Verne, and Kristen Soares, president of the Association of Independent California Colleges and Universities, coauthored the commentary, “Why California Needs to Invest in Independent Colleges and Universities,” with McElaney-Johnson.
