LOS ANGELES (Aug. 15, 2018) — Today, Mount Saint Mary’s University has received the 2018 “Inspiring Programs in STEM Award” from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the largest and oldest diversity and inclusion publication in higher education. The Inspiring Programs in STEM Award honors colleges and universities that encourage and assist students from underrepresented groups to enter the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Mount Saint Mary's Global Women in STEM and Policy undergraduate research program is now an award winner.

The Mount’s award stems from its innovative, cross-discipline Global Women in STEM and Policy (GWSP) undergraduate research training program. Designed by University faculty, the program is open to students majoring in biology, chemistry, political science, healthcare policy and global politics. Students accepted to GWSP form a cohort and engage in a three-semester, cross-discipline experience that culminates in a summer of global field research.

“Our goal with this project is to increase the number of women entering, and excelling, in the fields of STEM, public policy, and behavioral and social sciences,” says Lia Roberts, PhD, associate professor of political science and one of GWSP’s leads. “We also want to make sure this is a sustainable model to expand global research opportunities for both students and faculty.”

Mount Saint Mary’s will be featured, along with 77 other recipients nationwide, in the September 2018 issue of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, which also noted the University’s commitment to its mission as a women’s university and as an officially designated Hispanic-Serving Institution.

“We know that many STEM programs are not always recognized for their success, dedication and mentorship for underrepresented students,” says Lenore Pearlstein, owner and publisher of INSIGHT Into Diversity. “We want to honor the schools and organizations that have created programs that inspire and encourage young people who may currently be in or are interested in a future career in STEM. We are proud to honor these programs as role models to other institutions of higher education and beyond.”
