Pro Tips for using Databases

You can create personal accounts for most databases to save resources and search strategies for the future.

Just log in to the database of your choice (Quick Search, ProQuest, EBSCOhost, etc.) and find the "login" or "my account" button and sign up for a free personalized account.

Also known as Government Documents

Locating government information can seem daunting. Depending on your topic, there are a wide variety of resources at your disposal.

Federal Information

To begin research on Federal Government documents, start with locating the responsible agency through usa.gov.
Each agency has its own website and searchable content.

State Information

To start researching state-specific information, start with the government website associated with that specific state. For California, use ca.gov.

Legal Resources

The library subscribes to a number of resources that you may find helpful, including:

NexisUni  - (MSMU students, faculty, and staff only)
Features more than 15,000 news, business and legal sources from LexisNexis,  including U.S. Supreme Court decisions dating back to 1790.

HeinOnline - (MSMU students, faculty, and staff only)
Legal history and government documents, with law-related periodicals, the entire Congressional Record, Federal Register, and Code of Federal Regulations, complete coverage of the U.S. Reports back to 1754, and entire databases dedicated to treaties, constitutions, case law, world trials, classic treatises, international trade, foreign relations, U.S. Presidents, and much more.

What is a Journal?

 A journal, sometimes called a serial or a periodical, is a publication that is issued at regular intervals in a continuing series. This includes:

  • Popular Magazines
  • Professional or Trade Journals
  • Scholarly Journals
  • Newspapers

Journals are issued both online and in print. MSMU subscribes to many databases which include access to online journals and articles.

Use Quick Search to Find Journals in eJournals A-Z

  • Click on the link above.
  • Enter a title, subject, or ISSN to locate the journal-title.
  • Once you have located your desired journal, you can also use this feature to search within the journals themselves.

Search for Print Periodicals (Journals)

Use the MSMU Libraries Catalog to locate print periodicals.

Search by title or use the Advanced Search option to limit by Material Type "PERIODICAL."

Browsing is also encouraged! Circulation rules vary by campus.

Find Newspapers

MSMU Libraries subscribes to many popular newspapers including the New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Los Angeles Times (and many more!)

Search for Newspapers

To locate a newspaper by title, use either of the following methods:

  1. eJournals A-Z (search across many titles)
  2. Databases A-Z (narrow by a particular news database

Search for Newspapers in eJournals A-Z

  • Search across multiple newspapers using eJournals A-Z - also called Quick Search Publications
  • Here you can search for newspapers by title
  • You can also start at the main search box and narrow your search to "newspapers only"
    • Enter any keywords and hit search
    • On the results page, under Limit by Source Types select news

  • To begin, select one of our newspaper databases in Databases A-Z
  • These can be accessed by using the dropdown menu for Database Type and selecting News & Newspapers.
  • Example: A popular database from this list is News and Newspapers (ProQuest). Search by keyword or if you know the name of a specific newspaper you want to peruse, (example: Chicago Tribune) search by Publication.

What are Patents?

A patent is the legal right of an inventor to exclude others from making or using a particular invention. This right is customarily limited in time, to 20 years from the date of the application submission in most countries.  (New Palgrave Dictionary of Economics, 2nd edition)

What are Trademarks?

A trademark is a word, name, symbol, or device that is used in trade with goods to indicate the source of the goods and to distinguish them from the goods of others. Trademark rights may be used to prevent others from using a confusingly similar mark, but not to prevent others from making the same goods or from selling the same goods or services under a clearly different mark.  (U.S. Patent and Trademark Office)

Tips for Getting Started

 You may come across various tests and measurements while studying:

  • Psychology
  • Healthcare Administration and other medical applications
  • Business Administration
  • Education and Liberal Studies

Doing research in these fields may require collecting your own data, as well as the use of a test or measurement tool designed to address the specific variables in that data collection.

Finding the right test or instrument can be difficult.  In most cases, tests are copyrighted and must be purchased from the publishers. In other cases, instruments can be obtained for free directly from the original authors or may be found published entirely within a journal article.

Mental Measurements Yearbook (EBSCO)
Designed for a broad audience, the MMY contains information essential for a complete evaluation of standardized tests within areas as psychology, education, business, and leadership. Also included is access to Test in Print (TIP), a comprehensive bibliography of all known commercially available tests that are currently in print in the English language.

TestLink: Test Collection at ETS
Offers the publisher and cost information as well as some indication of whether the test has been published in the literature, but does not offer the in-depth reviews.

Some dissertations may be available in Quick Search.

  1. Visit Quick Search or enter a keyword search in the bar up above.
  2. After your results are displayed, at the left, under Limit by Source Type, select Show More.
  3. Scroll until you find Dissertations/Theses and check the box next to it to limit your results.

In Print at MSMU

  • The McCarthy Library has (circulating) copies of most MSMU graduate thesis projects from 1974 to the present. They are located on the second floor in a designated section.
  • The Coe Library has a few (circulating) copies of MSMU graduate education-related and music theses scattered among the stacks. They are located on the first floor, generally in the L and M sections.
  • The CSJ Institute has (non-circulating) copies of the CSJ's masters and doctoral theses.
