Mount Alum Presents on National Board Certification
Mount alum and middle school teacher Lovelyn Marquez-Prueher (2003: BA and Single Subject Teaching Credential) presented to MSMU students and alumnae on Wednesday, April 13th about the process of becoming Nationally Board Certified. "[It] was the best professional development experience I've ever had", she told audience members, noting that her students' test scores tripled after she became Board certified in 2009.
National Board Certification is a growing education reform movement that is concerned with advancing student achievement, developing and recognizing excellence in teaching, and improving schools. Teachers who achieve National Board Certification have met high standards through study, expert evaluation, self-assessment, and peer review. Becoming a Nationally Board Certified teacher allows teachers to demonstrate their teaching excellence, leadership, and results — and achieve a prestigious national credential.
Marquez-Prueher, an ESL/English Teacher at Wilmington Middle School, won her school's Teacher of the Year award in 2008-2009, and won an Early Career Teacher of Color Award Distinction from the National Council of Teachers of English in 2008. She has worked as an adjunct lecturer for both CSULA and CSUDH, and will be joining the Mount as an adjunct this fall.
Marquez-Prueher will be teaching EDU 244: National Board Preparation Seminar, a small-group seminar course which will help students navigate through one of the four portfolio tasks required to become a Nationally Board Certified Teacher.
