California Education Specialist: Mild/Moderate Disabilities

California Teacher Preparation Program and MS Degree in Education (Intern Option Available)

The California Education Specialist Programs at Mount Saint Mary’s University have been designed to provide you with many professional options. The core of your program will be the Education Specialist Credential Program. The Preliminary Program includes general and special education courses and field experiences. Upon completion of the Preliminary program, you will obtain an education specialist teaching position (if you don’t already have one) and begin an Induction Program. The Induction Program will support your continued professional development.

We offer an enhanced, streamlined 24-month credential/masters program with a focus on preparing the general education teacher to respond to the needs of all learners through an innovative program that infuses CCTC education specialist standards into the general education curriculum. This program offers advanced training that will support your ability to effectively teach students with special needs and develop a leadership role at your school site for all struggling learners.

The following coursework has been carefully planned to provide multiple opportunities to meet the state requirements for the Education Specialist Preliminary Credential. Please contact the Director of the Education Specialist Program, Dr. Diana Taylor, for additional information at 213.477.2627.

The Preliminary and Induction Teacher Preparation Programs meet the standards for and have been approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC), leading to a California Preliminary or Clear Teaching Credential.  Students who wish to practice in a state other than California will have additional licensing requirements to complete prior to practicing in a state outside of California. Mount Saint Mary’s University is in the process of researching program professional licensure standards in other states.  Contact the Education department at to discuss additional requirements that may be needed to obtain a teaching credential in a state outside of California.
