Background Information

Joris-Karl Huysman calls it “ostentatious oddity.”  Steely Dan calls it “slinging dread.” And H.D.  got it going with “anagrams, cryptograms, little boxes, conditioned to hatch butterflies.” American writing thrives on its ability to reinvent itself. Responding to the current stress fractures of our social reality, writers have had to reach, to stretch, to express the inexpressible. They have had to go against nature to give voice to the nature of our existence. Against Nature, sponsored by the MFA in Creative Writing at Mount Saint Mary's University, will bring together poets, novelists, essayists, and performance artists to explore writing that is experimental, contrary, given to skepticism, and above all, innovative.
