Previous Community Communications

Published on 11/05/19

Dear Mount Community,

Good afternoon, I hope all of you are doing well. As I mentioned in my email last night, I know one of your top concerns is when we will return to our Chalon Campus.

We have made the decision to keep the Chalon Campus closed through January 1, 2020. The campus will reopen on January 2, 2020. The decision to keep our Chalon Campus closed until the end of the year did not come easily, but we believe it is the right one for our community.

Although the buildings on campus have not sustained any structural damage, they must undergo an in-depth cleaning process to ensure the residence halls, classrooms and other buildings remain safe for students, faculty and staff. We anticipate that cleaning and repairs will be finished by Christmas.

We can assure you that we will take the necessary steps to continue to accommodate all of our students through the end of the year. This includes:

Housing: Chalon resident students will be provided housing through the end of fall semester final exams. Those who are staying at the Sheraton Gateway hotel may remain at the hotel until Sunday, December 15. Students who are staying on the Doheny Campus may also remain there until December 15.

Transportation: We will continue to offer shuttles between the Sheraton Gateway Hotel and the Doheny Campus. The shuttles will now run every hour from the hotel starting at 6:00 am, with the last shuttle leaving Doheny at 9:30 pm. This new schedule starts tomorrow, Wednesday, November 6.

Parking: Parking on-campus and at the off-site lot will continue to be provided. The shuttle service will transport students between the off-site lot and the Doheny Campus every 30 minutes from 6:30 am to 9:00 pm.

Uber Vouchers: It is possible that in some situations neither the shuttles nor the commuter parking options will work for a student.  In those situations, a student may use the Uber vouchers provided by the University.

Food: We are working on simplifying and adjusting meal plans in order to provide or additional flexibility for Chalon resident students. We will update you as those plans become final.

Classes: The revised class schedule that began this Monday will continue for the remainder of the fall semester. The Doheny room assignments for the relocated Chalon courses can be found by using WebAdvisor. Faculty instructors will continue to be in touch with students regarding classes.

Accessing Belongings on Chalon Campus: The residence halls are currently being cleaned. All of your belongings will be professionally cleaned by Belfour to remove the smell of smoke. Students will be provided access to the Chalon Campus to retrieve any personal items as soon as possible. Student Affairs is preparing a schedule and will send the information. If you have an urgent need to access the Chalon Campus, please contact MSMUStudentcommunication@msmu.edu, and we will make every effort to accommodate special requests.

Students will be able to move back into their residence halls on January 11, 2020, and classes for the Spring Semester at Chalon will start on January 13, 2020.

Please know we care deeply about this community, and the well-being of our students, faculty and staff. I will continue to keep you informed of any updates to ensure the safety and comfort of our community during this challenging time. We appreciate your flexibility, patience and understanding.

Warmly,
Ann

Dear Mount Community,

Today classes resumed, and we welcomed Chalon students to our Doheny Campus. I am thankful for your flexibility and patience as we settle into this temporary routine. I have had many conversations with students, faculty and staff over this past week, and the most pressing concern is when the Chalon Campus will reopen. I can assure you that this is top-of-mind for me as well. Cleanup efforts will be a multi-stage process, and we need to be sure that debris is removed, damage is repaired, and the air quality has improved significantly. We will have a clearer idea on when we will be able to reopen Chalon by Wednesday at the latest.

I understand that some students are having trouble using their Uber vouchers. Due to the high volume of rides requested at peak times, Uber’s system has automatically been placing holds on the University account. The University continues to refresh the account throughout the day to keep the vouchers active. Please monitor the Rideshare Vouchers page on the website for new Uber vouchers. We will also reimburse students who use their own Uber accounts to get to and from the Doheny Campus. Please take a screenshot of your receipt and email to MSMUStudentcommunication@msmu.edu.

In addition to classes starting this week, there are several fun activities and excursions planned. More details will be provided by email throughout the week from various departments hosting events.

I would like to invite you to join us tomorrow from 4:30 – 7:00 pm for a Taco Tuesday dinner at the Doheny Café.

As a reminder, Counseling and Psychological Services are available at Doheny, and I encourage you to use these resources. The CPS team is here to help you in any way they can. Their office is located on the first floor of McIntyre Hall, next to Donohue Center and Mercy Chapel.

Thank you again for your support for each other and this community.

Warmly,
Ann

We are all working together to continue classes, provide housing, transportation, meal options and support services for our students. This has been a true community effort. You have received multiple communications as we try to respond quickly to questions and issues as they arise, so I want to ensure that you have not missed any of the key information outlined below:

  • Chalon resident students were given housing options at Doheny as well as off-site at the Sheraton Gateway Los Angeles. We are providing parking, transportation and meal plans for students who stay at the hotel at no cost.
  • Counseling and Psychological Services are available for any student who needs support in any way. The CPS office is located on the first floor of McIntyre Hall, next to Donohue Center and Mercy Chapel, at Doheny.
  • We are keeping the Mount Community Update page (this page) on the website updated in real time. Please be sure to visit it for timely information.
  • Parking instructions for this upcoming week at Doheny were sent today.
  • We have prepared the attached document of Doheny Student Affairs Division locations.

As we welcome students, faculty and staff from Chalon to Doheny this week, we appreciate your flexibility and patience. We will have coffee waiting for you Monday morning before class from 7:30 - 10:00 am, and we invite you all to a Taco Tuesday dinner to officially welcome our Chalon students. More details will follow regarding the dinner. Several departments have also planned activities and excursions for our students. Please keep an eye out for information on scheduled events.

Thank you all for helping make this transition as smooth as possible.

Warmly,
Ann

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff:

As you know, our Doheny campus is welcoming our Chalon students, faculty and staff for classes beginning Monday 11/4/19.  We have made arrangements for increasing our parking capacity with the use of a valet company and nearby off-site parking. We are also designating certain parking areas for various groups to facilitate quicker parking for all.  Please see below for details.

Skinner parking structure (St. James Street near 23rd street):

Skinner shall be used by all residential students with parking permits living at Doheny (existing Doheny residents and Chalon residents temporarily living at Doheny).  EV parking spots in the garage may be used by non-electric vehicles if all other spots are full. Students should move their vehicles to this lot tonight.

AAA Parking Lot (open lot on right as you approach main entrance to campus):

This lot will be for all commuter students, faculty, staff with parking permits as well as daily rate parking and visitors. It will have a combination of self-parking and valet parking to accommodate more cars.

Figueroa Street (St. Vincent’s) Parking Lot:

This lot will be for faculty and staff with parking permits.  Students with parking permits may also park in this lot if directed by parking or security.

Campus Interior Street Parking

This parking will continue to be used for faculty, staff and visitors.  EV parking spots should only be used by electric vehicles unless directed by parking or security since the Skinner garage EV parking will be used by students.

Nearby Off-Site Parking (Joe’s Parking Lot at 240 West Venice Blvd (at 17th & Grand):

This lot, which is only a few minutes away from campus, will be used primarily for Chalon commuter students. A shuttle will run to and from the lot and Doheny every 20 minutes. The first shuttle will leave the lot at 6:30 a.m. and the last shuttle will leave Doheny at 9:45 p.m.

These assignments were made primarily based on estimated capacities of the lots and estimated volume of drivers within each group.  We understand that this is a new process for all of us. We will make adjustments as we move forward to ensure the most efficient and effective system is in place. Thank you in advance for your patience. Please let us know about your experience and please let us know if you need any special accommodation. Contact Ana Penagos in the office of the Vice President of Administration and Finance at apenagos@msmu.edu or 213.477.2905.

Dear Chalon residents,

You indicated you were interested in off-campus housing options until we reopen the Chalon Campus residence halls. We are delighted that we found hotel accommodations to house all of the Chalon residents seeking off-campus housing together in one location.

Hotel accommodations will be available starting Sunday, November 3rd at the Sheraton Gateway Hotel located at 6101 W Century Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90045. You will be able to stay in this hotel while we prepare to reopen the Chalon residence halls. Belfor USA, a national clean-up and restoration company, has been retained to assess the damage to campus, clean and make repairs to have the campus prepared for a safe return. They have begun cleaning and we expect their final assessment and estimate on timing by Friday, November 8th. We will then be able to provide you an update of when Chalon will reopen.

Details about the hotel and your stay:

  • Two students will be housed in each room, each with their own bed.
  • Parking is included in your stay. Please self-park. Valet parking is not included.
  • Check in will take place from 5:00 pm – 9:00 pm on Sunday, November 3rd. Brittney Plascencia-Saldana, MSMU Associate Director of Women’s Leadership and Student Engagement, will be on-site to coordinate this process and will be staying at the hotel as your point person and resource for the duration of your stay.
  • Daily breakfast is included in your stay.
  • For those without cars or carpools, shuttles will take you to and from Doheny Monday through Friday. Limited weekend shuttle service will also be provided for travel between the hotel and the Doheny campus. We will share the specifics once we finalize the number of students staying at the hotel.
  • You may use the Uber code from this link: https://r.uber.com/tn26wl7Q4P to get to the hotel and for trips to and from Doheny when the shuttle is not available.

We are finalizing details on how to provide maximum flexibility in using your meal plans both at the hotel and on campus. Details to follow shortly.

If you are still interested in staying at the hotel, please complete the following FORM no later than 10:00 am Sunday, November 3rd.

We are sending you information as soon as we have it, so please be sure to check your emails regularly.

We are thankful for your patience and flexibility during this time. Please know we are here to help you in any way you need.

Dear Mount community,

I am thankful our students were able to start accessing the Chalon Campus today to gather clothes, personal items and vehicles. Over the weekend, faculty will also be able to pick up belongings and materials to prepare for next week’s classes.

The Chalon Campus is still officially closed, as we need to clean up areas impacted by the fire. Fortunately, the campus did not sustain any structural damage.

I would like to share a quick reminder about some important items:

Instructions for Chalon residents to collect their belongings, transportation and parking, and class schedules can be found below on this page.

We look forward to welcoming all of our students, faculty and staff to the Doheny Campus next week when classes resume. We will have coffee waiting for you Monday morning before class from 7:30 to 10:00 a.m. and we invite you all to a Taco Tuesday dinner to officially welcome our Chalon students.

Thank you again for your flexibility at such a challenging time. We will do everything we can to ease this transition.

Above all else, I am thankful that everyone in and around our community is safe.

Warmly,
Ann

Dear Mount community,

We know this has been a difficult and challenging week for all of you. Please know that we are doing everything we can to get back to a more normal routine in the coming days and weeks, with your safety and well-being as the highest priorities.

I want to make sure you are aware of the following community updates:

Chalon Residents Accessing Dorms
  • We are thankful power is back and we’re able to allow students on campus to gather their personal items and vehicles. Chalon residents received an email with directions on how to access their belongings beginning tomorrow (Friday, Nov. 1).
Class Updates
  • Provost Bob Perrins sent an email to all students with information on classroom changes and instructions on finding where your class will be held next week.
  • As classes resume, faculty and staff are understanding and will work with you during this time of recovery and transition.

I am so thankful for all of you. I know that you have been through a lot this week. I continue to be moved by the incredible strength and resilience that Mount Saint Mary’s students, faculty and staff show in the face of challenging circumstances.

We are grateful for your patience and commitment to each other and our community.

Warmly,
Ann

Dear Chalon Students:

With the Chalon campus closed, classes that were being held at Chalon have been relocated to Doheny or in some instances moved to an online format beginning next Monday.

Your faculty will be in touch with you via email over the next few days as they prepare to deal with these changes.

To find out where your Chalon classes will be meeting next week please check on WebAdvisor; the new classroom information is listed there.

If the room assignment has not changed this means that the class has been moved to an online format, or the instructor will be making alternate arrangements that will be communicated to you later next week.

Yours in the Spirit of the Mount,

Dr. Bob Perrins
Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs

Dear Chalon Residents,

We have been granted access for our Chalon resident students to collect personal items beginning Friday, Nov. 1 through Sunday, Nov. 3. The campus needs to be professionally cleaned over the coming weeks due to smoke damage and debris from the Getty Fire. Fortunately, no structural damage occurred during the fire. As we do not know an exact timeline to reopen the Chalon Campus, we ask that you remove all valuables and take personal items and clothing that you need until we are able to reopen.

Given that we want to ensure your safety, and we do not have access to all of our parking lots at this time, we are asking all students to utilize shuttles from the Doheny Campus to get to the Chalon Campus rather than drive their individual cars. Shuttles will be departing from the Doheny shuttle stop located by the main entrance of campus in the AAA lot (next to the Security booth). To sign up for a space on a shuttle departing from Doheny please click HERE.

If you currently have a vehicle parked on the Chalon Campus, you will be able to retrieve your vehicle when the shuttle takes you to collect your personal items.

If you are unable to get to Doheny Campus and use our shuttles, a limited amount of time slots are available for you to drive your car to the entry of the Chalon Campus, where passenger vans will transport you to your residences. To view times and to sign up for a space, click HERE

Details

As you will have a brief amount of time on campus, we encourage you to make a list of items you want to be sure to pick up such as:

  • Prescriptions, vitamins, and eyeglasses
  • Wallet, personal identification, credit cards, and cash
  • Clothing
  • Electronics
  • Course materials

Please wear comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes since there is debris on campus. We will provide you with boxes and bags for your items, but you may also want to bring a small bag for your valuables.

We will provide the following for each student upon arriving to the Chalon Campus:

  • Mask
  • Gloves (non-latex)
  • Trash bags
  • Boxes – these will be transported via truck back to Doheny or taken to the designated area at Chalon where you will be able to pick them up.

If you have any questions, please call the Student Affairs Office at 213.477.2570 or email MSMUStudentCommunication@msmu.edu.

Dear Mount students,

The Chalon campus remains closed.

We are still without power and the Los Angeles Fire Department, in consultation with the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, has asked that access be prohibited until power is restored and the campus is safe. While you may hear about evacuation orders being lifted, these statements do not apply to our Chalon campus.

We are optimistic that we will begin allowing limited access to Chalon residents to retrieve their personal items and vehicles beginning tomorrow, Friday, November 1.

  • Shuttle buses will take students to and from Chalon from Doheny and Brentwood locations.
  • We will be providing assistance including boxes, face masks and gloves to make this process as safe and easy as possible.

Chalon students will receive details later today as we continue our discussions with the Fire Department. Please do not attempt to go to campus until further notice – you will be turned away.

We know that everyone is eager to get back to campus and we appreciate your patience and understanding.

Published on 10/30/19

As the university shared yesterday afternoon, classes are canceled for the remainder of the week at both campuses for traditional undergraduate students. Classes for both Chalon and Doheny students will resume on Monday, November 4th and will take place on the Doheny campus.

We are reaching out to provide Residents with more information on how to request housing and answer additional questions you may have.

Housing Spaces

The Doheny campus is currently being prepared to accommodate any Chalon resident who is in need of housing at the Doheny campus while the Chalon campus prepares to re-open. To request a room, please do the following:

  • Step 1: Please complete the following link to indicate your request for a room at the Doheny campus
  • Step 2: Residence Life will send you a confirmation email on Friday, November 1, 2019 by 3 pm that will include check-in details and information.  If you require immediate housing, please indicate this on the form.
Access to personal items:

We are waiting for the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) to give us partial-clearance to enter campus.  As soon as LAFD gives us clearance, MSMU will provide shuttles to transport Chalon residents to campus to retrieve personal items and school supplies.  It is likely that this will happen on Friday, November 1, 2019.  We will let you know as soon as we have official word from the LAFD.  To ensure your safety, no other vehicles will be allowed on campus until further notice.

We are working on getting a laundry and vehicle detailing service to support our students.  While this may take a few days to arrange, if you need a reimbursement for these services please email MSMUStudentCommunication@msmu.edu a copy of the full receipt and your contact information.

Vehicle Information

If you currently have a vehicle parked on campus, you will be able to retrieve your vehicle when the Shuttle takes you to collect your personal items.

We continue to monitor the situation near our Chalon Campus.  The neighborhood is still a mandatory evacuation zone and power has not been restored.  LAFD is on scene in the neighborhood and on our campus and will remain there until the evacuation is lifted.  Given this situation, traditional undergraduate classes are cancelled at Chalon for the remainder of this week (Wednesday, October 30 through Friday, November 1). All undergraduate classes at Doheny, with the exception of ADN and ABSN, are also cancelled for the remainder of this week.  ADN and ABSN classes will resume tomorrow, Wednesday, October 30.

We have limited access to the Chalon campus but can report that buildings are secure and as expected, the campus has sustained some non-structural damage from the fire and associated smoke.  As soon as the evacuation is lifted, we will begin our efforts to clean the campus and make necessary repairs.  This work will take several days.  We anticipate that Monday, November 11 is the earliest date we will be able to reopen the campus.

Please note that for next week (Monday, November 4 - Friday, November 8)

  • Chalon classes will be relocated to the Doheny campus.
  • All Doheny classes will resume at their regularly scheduled times.

A revised schedule for the Chalon classes that will be relocated to Doheny will be available by the end of this week. These Chalon classes will be in the same time-slots as originally assigned for the fall term, but new rooms will be assigned at Doheny.  Dr. Bob Perrins, our Provost, will send you information regarding room assignments for the relocated Chalon classes later in the week.

Graduate classes continue to be held according to the original schedule, and faculty are asked to be understanding given the challenging situation that some of their students may face at this time.

Please know that we remain in close touch with the CSJs at the Carondelet Center and they remain in good spirits and under the able protection of LAFD.

Thank you all for your patience and support in these challenging times.

Warm regards,
Ann
