Special Collections

  • Mount St. Mary’s Special Collections consist of rare books and early editions of the Bible, theology treatises, devotional works and Classical writings, as well as 18th, 19th, and 20th century art books and literature. Some of the holdings were once part of the extensive collections of Estelle Doheny and Edward Laurence “Ned” Doheny, Jr.

The MSMU Special Collections also holds a notable collection of books by and about John Henry Cardinal Newman.

The Alumnae Authors Collection comprises books by Mount graduates in a variety of fields from literature to nursing, including notable alumna Sr. Callista Roy, CSJ, '63.

Special collections are housed in the Charles Willard Coe Memorial Library, on the first (ground) floor in the Spearman Room.

    Guidelines for Access

Special Collections are open to Mount students, faculty and staff and to qualified researchers. Most of the books do not circulate but exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis. The exception is the Cardinal Newman Collection, which is available to Newman scholars through the MSMU Library Catalog and Link+.
