Doheny Student Resource Center
The Student Resource Center (SRC) at Doheny is dedicated to fostering academic excellence and student success. The philosophy that drives us is that our staff working with students promotes both academic and personal success. We promote student success through:
- Writing Consultations
- Subject Tutoring and Supplemental Instruction
- Discussion Groups, Workshops, and Events
- Student Success Counseling
- Peer Counseling
- Summer Pathways
while also helping guide students in their exploration and access to campus resources.
As a part of the Center for Academic Innovation and Creativity, the SRC employs novel and holistic approaches to supporting the whole student in their academic success at MSMU. Our staff is actively engaged in and committed to professional development and scholarly research related to the best practices in supporting student success.
Writing Consultations and Subject Tutoring
The SRC provides students enrolled at the Mount access to professional subject tutors and writing consultants Monday through Friday during the Academic year, free of charge.
Writing Consultants are available for 30-minute one-on-one sessions. Our Writing Consultants specialize in building the writing and editing skills of the students they see. Our Writing Consultants all have earned or are completing a Master’s degree and have experience teaching writing skills at the college level.
Subject Tutors provide 30-minute one-on-one tutoring sessions in a variety of subject areas. Additionally, some Subject Tutors offer 1-hour Supplemental Instruction group sessions which review material covered in specific MSMU courses. All Subject Tutors have earned or are completing a Master’s degree in the subject (or a closely related subject) they tutor, as well as have experience teaching in their subject at the college level.
Success and Peer Counseling
The SRC offers Mount students support in navigating the challenges of college life through Student Success Counseling and Peer Counseling Monday through Friday, free of charge.
Our professional Student Success Counselor holds a Master of Counseling Psychology degree and specializes in student access and agency in higher education. The Student Success Counselor, recruits and trains our Peer Counselors, and is available to assist students in achieving success academic or otherwise
Peer Counselors are second-year or higher Mount Students in good academic standing, who complete extensive training as Peer Educators and in Appreciative Advising to provide individualized support to their fellow students.
Together, the Student Success Counselor and Peer Counselors assist students with accessing resources across campus, effective goal setting, time management skills, and balancing life and school responsibilities.
The SRC operates the Mount’s summer bridge program, Summer Pathways. Summer Pathways is open to all incoming first-year students to the Mount, regardless of home campus. Students attend the Doheny campus for six weeks, Monday through Friday, in the summer before their first Fall Semester. Students take their First-Year Seminar 1 course, plus their choice of one other course offered and crafted to prepare them for success in their first year at MSMU. Students earn five college credits toward their graduation. Additionally, they will attend co-curricular workshops and tutoring, and extracurricular events and excursions all designed to introduce students to Mount resources, staff, faculty, and their classmates.
Students interested in attending Summer Pathways should contact Dohenysrc@msmu.edu for details on the current dates, course offerings, application deadlines, and with any additional questions.
