Alternative financing options are available for students who require additional funding to pay for college expenses. Please read below for more details.
Alternative loans, also known as private loans, can help you pay college expenses that may not be covered by federal loan programs or other financial aid. These loans are one way to provide additional funds to close the gap between your financial aid resources and college costs.
Alternative loans are credit based and sometimes require a credit-worthy co-signer. Interest rates vary, depending on credit history.
For more information, please contact the Office of Student Financing.
NOTE: The terms of these loans differ from lenders, and the student should compare the information to determine which loan best suits their needs. If an undergraduate borrows loans, a co-signer may be required. If the student applies for an alternative loan, a revised award letter will be sent to the student as notification that the loan application has been sent to the lender. However, this does not implicate the loan has been guaranteed. The lender will notify the student directly.
The deferred payment plan is offered to Graduate students only. For more information, please contact the Doheny Business Office at (213) 477-2540.
In addition to federal and state funding, students are encouraged to search for private grants and scholarships to help pay for college expenses.
Unlike loans, scholarships do not have to be paid back and should be sought out vigorously.

Beware of companies that guarantee or promise scholarships. Do not send money to companies that make generous promises, charge you money to receive aid, try to get you to send money by claiming you are a finalist in a scholarship contest or request your credit card or bank account number to hold a scholarship for you.
