Advanced Placement Exams

At Mount Saint Mary’s University students who earn scores of 4 or 5 in Advanced Placement Examinations may receive up to one year of credit and, in some cases, fulfillment of the College’s General Studies (GS) requirement.

Students who earn a score of 3 receive 3 units of elective credit. Students who receive a 4 or 5 for an examination for which they have already fulfilled a GS requirement will also receive 3 units of elective credit.

Advanced Placement test results should be sent from the College Board directly to Mount Saint Mary’s University, Office of Admissions.

HISTORY AND SOCIAL SCIENCES
U.S. History 4/5 6 units GS IIIC History requirement.  
European History 4/5 6 units GS IIIC History requirement.  
World History 4/5 3 units GS IIIC History requirement.  
U.S. Government/Politics 4/5 3 units GS IIIG Contemporary Economics/Politics requirement.  
Human Geography 4/5 3 units One half fulfillment of the GS VI Diversity requirement.  
LANGUAGE
Spanish Language 4/5 8 units GS IV Modern Language requirement. Even though you have completed our language requirement, if you decide to continue your study of Spanish after you enroll at MSMU, you may be required to take a proficiency exam to determine your competency level. Increasing your Spanish Language literacy could be very helpful in your future career, considering today’s diverse society.
Spanish Literature 4/5 3 units elective credit.  
French Language 4/5 8 units GS IV Modern Language requirement.  
MATHEMATICS
Calculus A/B 4/5 4 units MTH 5A and GS VII: QL2 credit. Upon recommendation of the department chairperson, the student should contact the instructor of MTH 5B and see if she/he can sit in on some classes during the fall in preparation for enrolling n MTH 5B during the spring semester.
Calculus B/C 4/5 8 units MTH  5A and MTH 5B and fulfills the GS VII: QL2 requirement.  
Statistics 4/5 3 units MTH 38 fulfills the GS IIIE requirement.  
Psychology
Psychology 4/5 3 units PSY 1 credit and fulfillment of the GS IIIF Social and Behavioral Science requirement.  
Chemistry
Chemistry 5 8 units CHE 1A, CHE 1B and fulfillment of the GS IIID Natural/Physical Science requirement.  
Biology 4/5 8 units BIO 1, BIO 2 and GS IIID Natural/Physical Science requirement.  
Environmental Science 4/5 3 units GS IIID Natural and Physical Sciences requirement.  
Physics B 5 7 units PHY 1A, PHY 1B, fulfills the GS IIID and GS VIIB requirements. Does not fulfill the lab requirement.
