What is HSI?
A Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) designation is awarded by the United States Department of Education to colleges and universities with at least 25% Hispanic enrollment.
The Department of Education provides grant funding from Title III and Title V to “institutions of higher education to assist with strengthening institutional programs, facilities, and services to expand the educational opportunities for Hispanic Americans and other underrepresented populations.” These funds are used to benefit all attendees of Mount Saint Mary’s University, through the creation and enhancement of new and improved curricula, the hiring of educators, and much more.
HSI and the Mount
Mount Saint Mary’s University has a long history of serving the Hispanic community. Since our founding, the Mount has sought out and nurtured the Hispanic community of Southern California, graduating untold numbers of students into the world with a background available only from attending an institution like MSMU.
Our HSI designation from the Department of Education recognizes our time-honored history of Hispanic representation. And the funds from Title III and Title V grants provide the Mount with the resources to not only serve our Hispanic student population, but every single student.
Some of the ways MSMU will be using its HSI-derived federal funds include faculty development, administrative management, development and improvement of academic programs, endowment funds, curriculum development, scientific or laboratory equipment for teaching, renovation of instructional facilities, joint use of facilities, academic tutoring, counseling programs and student support services.
Few institutions in Southern California compare to Mount Saint Mary’s University for representation of all cultures, including Hispanic. Our mission is to help young women become unstoppable, and our HSI designation helps us achieve that goal.
