Thirteen Athenians named Edison STEM Scholars
Mount Saint Mary’s STEM students continued to notch top academic honors during the 2014-2015 school year in Los Angeles. Most recently, 13 Athenians won Edison International Expendable Scholarships, supporting their pursuit of careers in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
The following Edison Scholars earned their awards based on performance in STEM-related majors like biochemistry and mathematics, strong grade-point average and their need for financial support: Mary Bekarian ’16, Connie Cardona ’17, Regina Cordova ’18, Sarah Cruz ’15, Ana De La Cruz ’17, Marilyn Del Valle ’15, Jessica Diaz ’16, Daisy Galindo ’16, Diana Hernandez ’15, Jazmine Martinez ’17, Gladys Olivares ’17, Mary Safaeipour ’16 and Lusine Topchyan ’15.
Five of the scholarship recipients also earned Dean’s List honors for the 2014-2015 academic school year. In addition, three of these Mount Saint Mary’s students have been accepted to prestigious summer research programs at universities throughout the United States.
Connie Cardona ’17 will attend the University of Virginia School of Medicine’s Summer Medical and Dental Education Program. Ana De La Cruz ’17 will join the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill’s Physics and Astronomy Department, while Daisy Galindo ’16 was named a Charles Ross Summer Research Fellow in the University of Michigan’s Pharmacology Department.
The Edison Scholars program is the signature initiative of Edison International, awarding nearly $5.3 million in scholarships to nearly 500 students since 2006. The 13 scholarships awarded to Mount Saint Mary's students totaled $50,000.
