Stage production of Joan Didion's 'The Year of Magical Thinking' makes its Los Angeles premiere at Mount Saint Mary’s University
Los Angeles / Aug. 20, 2013 — "The Year of Magical Thinking" by Joan Didion is a stage adaptation of the California-born writer's Pulitzer Prize-winning memoir on the untimely deaths of her husband John Gregory Dunne and their daughter Quintana Roo.
This September, the critically praised production makes its L.A. premiere starring Janis Stevens, a Drama Desk Award Nominee. "The Year of Magical Thinking" will be presented at Mount Saint Mary’s University's Doheny Campus for two weekends only, Sept. 20-22 and 27-29.

Didion's script is poetic in its bluntness, its seeming detachment and its unavoidable truth. Yet, as director Ray Tatar notes: "Although the main focus of this play is on Didion's struggle with grief, it does not mean there aren't any laughs. Her experience includes odd flashes of humor and insight."
On stage alone in this one-person play, Stevens captures how Didion managed to persevere in the midst of crushing grief. Stevens, a member of Actors Equity, has performed "The Year of Magical Thinking" for more than a year, garnering praise from coast to coast.
"Stevens employs a charged intensity as she moves among the hallmarks of grief: shock, fury, tears, denial, a temporary insanity." —Times Argus (Montpellier, Vt.)
"Stevens gives yet another outstanding performance." —Sacramento News and Review (Sacramento, Calif.)
