Robert Perrins named new University provost
LOS ANGELES, July 1, 2016 — Mount Saint Mary's University has a new provost: Robert Perrins, PhD, brings with him to the position a wealth of experience in higher education over the past three decades.
Perrins comes to the Mount from Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, one of Canada’s oldest and most respected liberal arts universities. There, he worked in a variety of academic and administrative roles at Acadia, dating back to 1995. Perrins taught in the school’s Department of History and Classics, Department of Politics and Department of Chinese Studies. Perrins established the Northeast Asia Research Center at Acadia, enabling undergraduate students to research the modern history and politics of China, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan and Hong Kong. He also served as Acadia's dean of the faculty of Arts from 2006 to 2014 and most recently helped lead Acadia as its acting academic vice president.
Along the way, Perrins has established a commitment to, and success in, leading and supporting diversity issues – most notably as Acadia’s administrative facilitator of more than 30 equity and diversity workshops over the past six years. He also has experience in higher education assessment and accreditation, having been selected as one of three appointees in Nova Scotia to serve on the Academic Advisory Committee of the Maritime Provinces Higher Education Commission. The Commission supervises all college and university degree and program accreditations and reviews for three Canadian provinces.
A scholar of history throughout his own studies and teaching career, Perrins received his BA in history at McMaster University. He earned his MA and a PhD in history from York University in Toronto.
