Nonpartisan Campaign Training For Women Attempts To Reverse The Trends Of 2014 Midterm Elections
Los Angeles, Jan. 29, 2015 - When it comes to women's political representation, the 2014 U.S. midterm elections offered mixed results. Across the nation, voters sent more than 100 women to Congress for the first time in U.S. history. In California, however, the new state legislature will include the fewest number of women serving since 1998.
Mount Saint Mary's University is attempting to reverse the statewide trend. On Saturday, February 7, Mount Saint Mary's will host its third annual Ready to Run (www.msmu.edu/r2r ) event, a day of nonpartisan campaign training for women. The program is designed to encourage more women to get involved in public service, and delivers practical advice about running for elective office, positioning for appointive office and working on political campaigns.
This year's keynote features the mother-daughter pairing of veteran California public servant Yvonne B. Burke and California Assemblymember Autumn Burke. Each woman has navigated the California political scene. In 1972, voters elected Yvonne B. Burke as the state's first African-American woman to serve in the U.S. Congress. In 2014, Autumn Burke won election to the California State Assembly, representing the state's 62nd District.
A few of the other speakers at Ready to Run 2015 include: State Sen. Carol Liu; California Assemblymember Melissa Melendez; New Jersey State Senate Leader Loretta Weinberg; Mona Pasquil, appointments secretary for Gov. Jerry Brown; Commissioner Kathleen Kim, Los Angeles Police Commission; and Commissioner Rebecca Ninburg, City of L.A. Commission on the Status of Women.
Expert panelists will discuss topics such as "The Nuts and Bolts of Running for Office" and "Women in Appointments." Political strategists and communications consultants will advise on issues related to fundraising, networking, campaign strategy and public speaking.

About Ready to Run™
Mount Saint Mary's University is the exclusive Southern California partner of Ready to Run with the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. Research shows that women make government more transparent, inclusive and accessible. Women bring different priorities and experiences to public life, including perspectives that have been largely absent in public policymaking. Women change the way government works, and their voices are needed in legislative chambers around the country.
