Mount Hosts 16th Annual Student Leadership Conference

Feb. 13, 2006 -- More than 450 middle school, high school, and college students from throughout Southern California participated in the 16th Annual Student Leadership Conference of the Western Association of Educational Opportunity Personnel (WESTOP) Southern California Chapter on Feb. 11 at the Mount's Doheny Campus. The event featured special guest speakers and a variety of helpful workshops.


Guest speaker Bernard Parks, Los Angeles City Councilmember, 8th District, spoke to students about his challenges growing up as compared to the many opportunities young people have today. He encouraged them to do their best in school and to learn about the opportunities that are available to them. Guest speaker Val Zavala, Mount Trustee and Vice President of News & Public Affairs for KCET Television, discussed her educational experience and explained how "character is destiny."

About 100 current and former Mount staff and faculty conducted workshops on a variety of topics, including College Prep 101, Y.O.G.A.: Your Own Greatness Affirmed, Strategy Matters, Involvement Counts, and College Life.
