L.A. sculptor Peter Shelton exhibits 'littleBIG' at José Drudis-Biada Art Gallery
Los Angeles, Sept. 9, 2014 — Renowned L.A. sculptor Peter Shelton will debut his newest works as part of "littleBIG," a show to be hosted September 14 to October 25 at Mount St. Mary's José Drudis-Biada Art Gallery. An opening reception on Sunday, September 14, is open to the public, and will last from 3-6 p.m.
Recognized for his humorous and sensuous sculptures of grand scale, Shelton might be best known in Los Angeles for "sixbeastsandtwomonkeys," a monumental, and controversial, sculptural grouping on Spring Street outside the Los Angeles Police Department headquarters. Upon their unveiling in 2009, former LAPD Police Chief William Bratton said the cast-bronze sculptures looked like "some kind of cow splat." The whimsical pieces have continued to generate great conversation among Angelenos ever since.
Shelton's new exhibit at the Mount includes a mix of pieces in steel, bronze, mixed media and mylar. And plenty of them require a sense of imagination – as well as a sense of humor. "littleBIG" is made possible through the assistance of the artist and the L.A. Louver Gallery.
Shelton has exhibited at shows throughout the United States, as well as internationally, since the 1970s. His work is part of collections at distinguished galleries such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York; the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C.; the Panza Foundation in Milan, Italy; and at Los Angeles' Getty Center, and the Museum of Contemporary Art.
Mount St. Mary's José Drudis-Biada Art Gallery is located on the College's Chalon Campus, and is open daily from noon to 5 p.m. For more information on the Gallery and the Peter Shelton exhibit, visit www.msmu.edu/gallery.
