Former U.S. Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky to speak at public event at the Mount
LOS ANGELES, Jan. 17, 2017 — Former U.S. Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky — a prolific poet, essayist and teacher — will present an intriguing lecture and “improvisation” on the poetics of democracy to members of the historic Ruskin Art Club and to students and faculty of Mount Saint Mary’s University on Sunday evening, January 22, 7 p.m.
Presented by the Ruskin Art Club and co-sponsored by Mount Saint Mary’s, this event will take place inside Rose Hills Auditorium on the University’s downtown L.A. Doheny Campus. It is open to the public.
The title of Pinsky’s lecture, “Rusted Is Living/Polished Is Dead,” is drawn from 19th century art and social critic John Ruskin and will reflect on Ruskin’s idea of the living dynamism of nature as it appears in the poetry of American modernist poets Marianne Moore and William Carlos Williams, as well as in his own work. Coming only two days after the presidential inauguration, Pinsky’s reflections on the wilder edges of Ruskin’s thought, the nature of democracy, and a poetics that celebrates “hybrids, improvisations and fluidities” could not be more timely. A discussion, led by the distinguished Southern California poet Lynne Thompson, will follow the lecture. A reception and book signing cap the evening.
General admission is $10 for adults, $5 for students and persons on a fixed income. Members of the Ruskin Art Club, L.A.’s oldest cultural association, and students and faculty of Mount Saint Mary’s University are admitted free of charge. There is ample free parking on campus for all guests.
