Foreign policy expert to speak at Mount Saint Mary’s University's May 12 Commencement ceremony at Shrine Auditorium

Los Angeles — Mount Saint Mary’s University will hold its 2014 Commencement exercises at L.A.'s historic Shrine Auditorium on May 12. The Commencement address will be delivered by Dr. Maryann Cusimano Love, an author, adviser to the U.S. Department of State, and an associate professor of International Relations at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.

As a core member of the U.S. State Department's working group on Religion and Foreign Policy, Love makes recommendations to the U.S. Secretary of State on how the U.S. government can better engage with civil society and religious actors in foreign policy. She also served as a Fellow at the Commission on International Religious Freedom and works with the Foreign Service Institute to create training materials on religion and foreign policy.

Love's courses – at both The Catholic University of America, and at the Pentagon – include "Security," "Peace Studies," "Just Peace," "Foreign Policy," "Terrorism," "Globalization" and "The Problem of Sovereignty." She is also a member of the U.S. Catholic Bishops' International Justice and Peace Committee, advising bishops on international affairs and U.S. foreign policy.

A global speaker and noted author, Love has spoken on religious peace-building at the Vatican and at the United Nations. Her most recent books include "Beyond Sovereignty: Issues for a Global Agenda" and "Morality Matters: Ethics and the War on Terrorism."

Shrine Auditorium is now the home for Mount St. Mary's annual Commencement ceremonies. The auditorium, located three blocks from the College's downtown Doheny Campus, was built in 1906 as a civic center and home base for the Al Malaikah Shriners. When it was rebuilt and expanded in 1926, it quickly became the hub of entertainment in Los Angeles. Today, Shrine Auditorium is one of the largest theaters in Southern California, with a capacity of 6,300.

The Carondelet Medal
Mount St. Mary's also annually awards The Carondelet Medal at its Commencement exercises, the highest honor awarded by the College. This year's recipient will be Robert A. Smith III, the president of the Carrie Estelle Doheny Foundation and past president of the Catholic Education Foundation.

The Carondelet Medal is bestowed upon individuals whose accomplishments, professional achievements or public service have expressed the values of the College and advanced its mission in an extraordinary manner. Smith has been deeply involved in Catholic education for many years, devoting countless hours of volunteer time in his parish. He is a recipient of the Cardinal's Award from the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and has received the Elizabeth Ann Seton Award from the National Catholic Education Association.
