Center for Academic Innovation and Creativity

Advancing and supporting the intellectual engagement of faculty, staff and students to drive excellence in teaching, learning and research.

The Center for Academic Innovation and Creativity exists to foster student success and support faculty development. And we seek to do so in new and engaging ways. We believe that curiosity, experimentation and diversity of thought are vital to advancing human knowledge, cultural awareness and professional excellence.

The Center acts as a fulcrum for one of Mount Saint Mary’s core values — innovative teaching and learning — by providing access to tools and resources that spark the imagination and promote excellence in the classroom, in the lab and in the field. Through the Center, Mount Saint Mary’s faculty develop and share effective teaching strategies, and examine new technologies and emerging best practices in teaching and learning.

Students participate in interdisciplinary initiatives like the Center’s annual academic symposium, the Keck Undergraduate Research Program, and the University’s Honors Program. Students can also utilize holistic mentoring and tutoring services that support their success throughout their college career and beyond. Partners, educators and the general public can learn from our research and utilize best practices.

How we operate

The Center forwards faculty development and experimentation across all divisions at the Mount, supporting innovative teaching methods and curricular and co-curricular designs in our traditional undergraduate program, Graduate Division, Weekend/Evening College and MSMU Online. This includes interdisciplinary student initiatives housed within the Center, as well as in-person and online resources designed to drive creative, successful approaches to learning.

In collaboration with Mount Saint Mary’s faculty and its governing bodies, the Center also promotes cutting-edge course designs and unique learning experiences that enhance Mount Saint Mary’s signature General Education curriculum known as LACE: Liberal Arts Core Education. LACE provides students with a foundation in fundamental skills that are necessary in the 21st century, and pairs those skills with an understanding of the traits that define Mount graduates — such as global awareness, community involvement and a commitment to the advancement of women.
