Asian Americans and Native American Pacific Islanders Serving Institutions

Learn more about the Mount's AANAPISI Designation

AANAPISI

What is AANAPISI?

The AANAPISI program, one of eight federally designated Minority Serving Institution (MSI) programs, was established by Congress in 2007 as part of the College Cost Reduction and Access Act. It was expanded in 2008 under the Higher Education Opportunity Act.

To qualify for an AANAPISI grant, an institution must have at the time of application, an enrollment of undergraduate students that is at least ten percent Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander students. At least 50% of an applicant institution’s degree-seeking students must receive financial assistance under one or more of the following programs: the Federal Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG), Federal Work Study (FWS), or the Federal Perkins Loan. Institutions must first apply for designation of eligibility and be deemed eligible to compete for an AANAPISI grant. Institutions may direct grants toward construction or renovation of instructional facilities, purchase of educational materials, development of faculty and curriculum, and support of student services.

AANAPISI and the Mount

Mount Saint Mary’s University has a long history of serving the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community. Since our founding, the Mount has sought out and nurtured the AAPI community of Southern California, graduating a significant number of students into the world with a background available only from attending an institution like MSMU.

Our AANAPISI designation from the Department of Education recognizes our time-honored history of AAPI representation. Some of the ways MSMU uses its AANAPISI federal funds include faculty development, administrative management, development and improvement of academic programs, endowment funds, curriculum development, scientific or laboratory equipment for teaching, renovation of instructional facilities, joint use of facilities, academic tutoring, counseling programs and student support services.

Few institutions in Southern California compare to Mount Saint Mary’s University for diversity of cultures. Our mission is to help young women become unstoppable, and our AANAPISI designation helps us achieve that goal.

AANAPISI and Higher Education

Only 281 colleges and universities in 29 states are qualified under AANAPISI, which is 8% of institutions in the United States.

Private institutions such as Mount Saint Mary’s serve 46% of eligible students.
