Center for the Advancement of Women

  • About:

Mount Saint Mary’s University is the only women’s university in Los Angeles with the oldest women’s leadership program in the western United States. The University is also the premier researcher for gender issues throughout California and is recognized nationally for its data-driven approach to gender equity. Currently, the University produces the annual Report on the Status of Women and Girls in California™ as well as similar reports for cities, counties, women’s commission and community organizations throughout the state to examine gender gaps in key sectors and industries and promote solutions.

In addition, Mount Saint Mary’s plays a critical role as a convener for leadership training and discussions for timely issues affecting women and girls. The University hosts three annual events: The Report on the Status of Women and Girls in California™ research release, the Women’s Leadership Conference and Ready to Run™. The Center for the Advancement of Women at Mount Saint Mary’s University will build upon these initiatives and provide Mount Saint Mary’s with the resources to serve diverse communities throughout the state with vital data and training to support advocacy and action that improves the lives of women, girls and families.

    Approach:

Data is useless if it sits on a shelf. Data can be an effective tool to educate and spur action. The Center will deepen Mount Saint Mary’s efforts toward gender equity by broadening its research initiatives, sharing data to a wider audience and creating leadership training opportunities for women throughout the state. Data collection, data dissemination and data-driven training are the three main components of the Center’s work.

    The Goal:

The overarching goal of the Center is to promote and increase gender equity in our state and region. The Center will accomplish this goal by providing every county and city in the state of California with the data and leadership training needed to educate elected and appointed officials, advocates and citizens about gender equity in their communities.
